Company Overview

The Chemours Co. is among the world’s largest producers of fluorochemicals and fluoropolymers. The company was established in July 2015 as a spinoff of the performance chemicals segment of DuPont. Product segments of the company include refrigerants, industrial fluoropolymer resins, sodium cyanide, performance chemicals and intermediates, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment.

The company’s business divisions include three segments:

  • Titanium Technologies.
  • Advanced Performance Materials.
  • Thermal and Specialized Solutions.

The company has a wide manufacturing presence with 29 major production facilities in nine countries. The company’s products are marketed across 120 countries to a customer base of about 2,900. The company has an employee strength of approximately 6,000.

Chemours, previously known as DuPont, was behind the discovery of PTFE in 1938, after which the company introduced numerous products based on fluoropolymers.

Fluoropolymer products include various industrial resins, specialty products and coatings. The company serves a wide range of essential industrial and end-user applications, including electronics, communications, automotive, wire and cable, energy, oil and gas, and aerospace, among others.

Teflon coatings, resins, additives, and films are used in a wide range of industrial products. Fluoroelastomer products sold under the Viton brand name are used in automotive, consumer electronics, chemical processing, oil and gas, petroleum refining and transportation, and aircraft and aerospace applications.

DuPont has established a number of joint venture fluoropolymer and fluoroelastomer businesses located in China in recent years.

In 2018, the company announced an increase in production capacity in the U.S. (West Virginia) for high-performance polymers by 15% in order to cater to the rising demand from the semiconductor industry.

In 2015, DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions (now Chemours) and Zhonghao Chenguang Chemical Research Institute (Chenguang), a subsidiary of China National Chemical Corp. (ChemChina), formed a 50/50 joint venture for the production and marketing of fluoroelastomer gums and pre-compounds in China.
