Company Overview

Founded in 1997, Macrogen Inc. is a leading Asian provider of genomics services, including next-generation sequencing.

Macrogen is positioned in the clinical sequencing industry as a result of several factors, including its strategic partnership with Illumina, the development of an NGS system by its subsidiary (Lightspeed Genomics) and its expansion into the pharmacogenomics market.

Macrogen is a key partner in the Autism Speaks Ten Thousand Genomes Program (MSSNG) project. Macrogen performs the sequencing for this project and a round of variant calling on the raw sequence data. The MSSNG project is building an open repository of whole-genome sequence data, phenotype and clinical information from 10,000 individuals and families with autism. The repository will be available to researchers, as well as clinicians and families.

Macrogen provides a rare genetic disease screening service, which includes carrier screening and newborn screening.

In December 2019, South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare selected Macrogen as one of four companies to participate in its DTC pilot project. The ministry allowed these four companies to conduct DTC genetic testing for up to 56 items in the wellness category, including vitamin D, fitness, and alcohol and nicotine metabolism.
