Company Snapshot
Company Overview
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Kioxia Holdings Corp. sprang from Toshiba Memory Corp. In 1987, KIOXIA invented the world’s first NAND flash memory for data storage. The technology is now being used in applications ranging from smartphones to data centers. Moreover, Kioxia announced the world’s first three-dimensional (3D) flash memory technology in 2007.
Along with its subsidiaries, the company manufactures electronic products and provides services through four segments: Social Infrastructure, Home Appliances, Electronic Devices, and Digital Products. The Electronic Devices segment enables data-intensive applications on mobile equipment. The segment provides NAND flash memory, storage products such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs), and discrete semiconductor products. As of March 31, 2022, the company had approx. 14,200 employees worldwide.
Kioxia produces more than one-third of the flash memory used globally. In 2020, Kioxia held approximately a 20% share in the global flash memory market. The company holds around a 35% market share, including that accounted for by Western Digital under its joint venture arrangement.
In October 2022, Kioxia and Western Digital Corp. opened a state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication facility, Fab7, at the Yokkaichi Plant in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Production capacity at Fab7 will ramp up in stages over time, in line with market trends. Fab7 has the capability to produce sixth-generation, 162-layer flash memory and future advanced 3D flash memory, and is scheduled to start shipping 162-layer flash memory in early 2023.
