Jabil Circuit began in 1966 in Detroit. Its earliest work was the manual assembly of replacement circuit boards for Control Data Corp. The name Jabil originated with the founders’ first names, a combination of James and Bill. In 1976, the company won a large contract from General Motors to develop a customized, highly automated production process. In 1982, the company moved its headquarters to St. Petersburg, Fla. During the 1990s, Jabil opened operations in Europe, Latin America and Malaysia. In 2002, the firm acquired Philips Contract Manufacturing Services.

The company’s manufacturing business comprises of three operating segments:

  • The Consumer Division has dedicated resources designed to meet the particular needs of the consumer products industry and focuses on cell phones and mobile products, televisions, set-top boxes and peripheral products such as printers.
  • The EMS Division focuses on the traditional and emerging electronics manufacturing services business segments, including automotive, computing, defense and aerospace, industrial, medical, networking, storage and telecommunications businesses.
  • The Aftermarket Services Division provides warranty and repair services.
