Company Overview

Momentive Specialty Chemicals was renamed Hexion Inc. It is one of the leading producers of adhesives, coatings, and composite materials. The company supplies wood adhesives and is the number one supplier of wood adhesives in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Australia. In composites, the company provides epoxy resin. The company has 34 production sites and serves more than 2,900 customers in approximately 86 countries. End markets served by the company are residential and non-residential construction, wind energy, industrial, automotive, consumer goods, and electronics. In November 2021, Hexion announced the sale of its epoxy-based coatings and composite businesses. The transaction was completed in February 2022; now, the company’s business segment continues operations with Adhesives Segment and its Versatic Acids and Derivatives product lines.

Also, in March 2022, American Securities LLC acquired Hexion Inc. The company will continue its operation under American Securities ownership.

The company has two major business segments.

Adhesives
This business segment produces construction and industrial adhesives and additives for energy and agricultural applications. The company’s formaldehyde-based resins are used in engineered timber products. The segment also produces formaldehyde, which is a raw material for various chemicals, including methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (“MDI”) and butanediol (“BDO”).

Coatings & Composites
This segment produces epoxy specialty resins, modifiers, and curing agents. Epoxy resins are used in the automotive, construction, wind energy, aerospace, and electronics industries. Specialty epoxy products replace traditional materials such as metal, wood, and ceramics or can be applied where traditional materials do not meet demanding engineering specifications. Its resins are used in the fiber-reinforced composite and composite fabricators in the wind energy, automotive, and pipe markets and are also used for various high-end coating applications. This segment also produces and supplies Versatic acids and derivatives, primarily to the polymers, paints, coatings, construction, and adhesives markets. The acid helps protect the coating on cars and improve the strength and durability of the concrete. This cost-effective product is applied in adhesives, decorative paints, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, peroxides, catalysts, and lubricants.
