Company Overview
The first Hempel factory started production in 1915 in Denmark. The group has since grown to become a worldwide enterprise comprising two main and four regional research and development facilities, 20 manufacturing plants, 47 sales offices and more than 130 stock points strategically located around world. Hempel operates within several strategic segments. These include marine paints, protective coatings, container coatings, decorative paints and yacht paints.
During 2009, Hempel introduced a new universal primer, Hempadur Quattro anticorrosive coating, which is suitable for a wide range of surfaces and offers a year-round application window. The firm built new factories in China, Poland and Argentina.
On the merger and acquisition front, beginning in January 2009, Hempel acquired the remaining shares of Hempel-Hai Hong from China Merchants Holding (International) Co. Ltd., integrating all of its activities in China and the Asia-Pacific region into one organization. As part of the Asia-Pacific regional integration, Hempel renamed its Chinese company Hempel China. In December 2009, Hempel acquired the remaining shareholding in Hempel Indonesia to reach 100% ownership. In January 2010, in a deal with United Industries Co. KSCC, Hempel increased its shares in Dahna Paint Middle East to 51.1%. At the same time, Hempel increased its shares in Hempel Qatar and Hempel Emirates from 21.2% to 29.0%.
At the beginning of 2011, it opened a new manufacturing facility in Guangzhou, China, which includes a new research and development center, the third-largest R&D facility within the Hempel Group. Hempel also signed an investment agreement in 2011, between itself and local government officials in the Russian Ulyanovsk region, marking its first Russian paint-production facility, meant to help meet growing demand for Hempel coatings in the Russian market. In July 2012, the Danish company also acquired the U.K.’s second-largest coating maker, Crown Paints. The decorative coating manufacturer will help Hempel to grow its decorative coatings business. In July 2012, Hempel acquired protective linings and coatings manufacturer Blome International of O’Fallon, Miss., through its U.S.-based affiliate, Hempel (U.S.) Inc.
Hempel also expanded its operations in the Indian subcontinent with the opening of a new manufacturing unit in Nashik, Maharashtra. In addition, Hempel expanded its R&D center in Spain to offer a more complete protective coating system with advanced intumescent technology.
