Company Overview

Genomatica applies metabolic engineering to the creation of new organisms and manufacturing processes for direct, bio-based production of high-value intermediate and basic chemicals. bio-BDO, the company’s first product, is the metabolically engineered equivalent of 1,4-butanediol (BDO), a well-established chemical intermediate product used in spandex, running shoes and automotive plastics.

Genomatica’s BDO process is now commercial. BDO made using Genomatica’s process has been successfully tested by multiple companies for use in their downstream materials, products and processes. In April 2013, Toray was the first company to publicly confirm successful production of bio-based polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and part samples from BDO made with Genomatica’s process. Genomatica’s technology has been licensed by BASF, the world’s foremost chemical producer and BDO producer, as well as by Novamont of Italy.

Genomatica has partnered with Waste Management Inc. to turn gas from trash into chemicals with the help of organisms. Genomatica will create organisms and manufacturing processes for turning syngas into major-market chemicals.
