COORSTEK INC.
Company Snapshot
Company Overview
CoorsTek originated in 1910, when Adolph Coors, the founder of the Adolph Coors brewery, invested in Herold China and Pottery Co., a manufacturer of oven-safe porcelain. The company was renamed Coors Porcelain in 1920 and Coors Ceramics in 1986. In 1992, Adolph Coors Co. spun-off ACX Technologies, which included Coors Ceramics and other non-brewery assets. On January 1, 2000, CoorsTek was in turn spun-off from ACX Technologies and began its existence as a separate company.
CoorsTek currently represents the largest technical ceramics manufacturer in North America, with manufacturing facilities in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. CoorsTek produces ceramic products for numerous applications, including aerospace and aviation components; ceramic armor; ceramic air-bearing guideways; electronic ceramics; ceramics for food and beverage; components for lasers, parts for industrial applications; medical device components; and parts for fuel cells, sensors and membranes.
CoorsTek manufactures zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) components for thermal applications that are built to withstand extremely harsh environments; ZTA and alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) for medical implants and surgical instruments; boron nitride impregnated SiC for wear- and corrosion-resistant products and high-temperature applications; and C/SiC composites for power generation.
In September 2011, CoorsTek purchased BAE Systems’ Advanced Ceramics business in Vista, Calif. BAE Systems’ Advanced Ceramics Division, previously named Cercom Inc., was a subsidiary of United Defense Industries (UDI). UDI was acquired by BAE Systems in June 2005. Founded in 1985, Cercom was dedicated to the development and fabrication of advanced ceramics and CMCs.
Products of BAE’s Advanced Ceramic Division included body armor, ceramic balls, bearings, insert blanks, seals, semiconductors, housings, microwave components, nozzles, wear-resistant parts, crucibles and grinding media. These products are made for semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, petroleum, automotive, defense and industrial applications. With this acquisition, CoorsTek further expanded its offering of ceramic and CMC products.
