CARGILL INC.
Company Snapshot
Company Overview
Cargill Inc. is an American multinational corporation that engages in the processing of agricultural products, commodities trading, and provision of food products. Cargill has been involved in the production of biofuels since the early 2000s. Cargill is the third-largest FAME biodiesel manufacturer in the U.S.
Since 2021, the company has supplied the marine sector with FAME biodiesel to ships between the Netherlands and Singapore. The company’s customers are container ships and car carriers. In 2021, in partnership with Maersk Tankers, Cargill launched Pure Marine Fuels, its marine fuel brand. The company used waste feedstock to produce the biofuel, and it was produced in Cargill’s plant in Ghent with 400,000 mt/year of FAME biodiesel capacity.
By 2025-26, the company plans to produce and use green methanol for its charter. In January 2023, the company partnered with Japan’s Mitsui & Co. and ordered methanol-powered bulk carriers. In June 2023, the company contained three more methanol-powered vessels in partnership with Danish fleet owner J. Lauritzen. These vessels will be the world’s first methanol-powered commercial bulkers. With the shipping business’s cooking oil supply chain, the company has an advantage in biofuel.
